It was established by an Act of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly legislative Assembly on November 15, 1969. It started functioning from 1st October, 1970. its headquarters is situated in Dharmshala . Every year the board conduct the Class 12th ( Plus 2) exam for Arts,Science and Commerce Stream . HP Board conducts examination for the 12th, 10+2, J.B.T and T.T.C classes .
