Republican Donald Trump stunned the world on Tuesday by defeating heavily favored Hillary Clinton in the race for the White House, ending eight years of Democratic rule and sending the United States on a new, uncertain path.
The Republican took the key swing states of Florida, North Carolina and Ohio early this morning, as he marched towards the White House. Donald Trump won the US presidential election early this morning in a stunning victory that sent shockwaves around the world.
The Associated Press and Fox News projected that Trump had collected just enough of the 270 state-by-state electoral votes needed to win a four-year term that starts on Jan. 20, taking battleground states where presidential elections are traditionally decided.
Mr Trump pledged that he would be “president for all Americans” in his New York victory speech.
He said he was “reaching out” to the people who had not supported him to “unify the country”.
Trump’s victory exposed real divisions and new fault lines in the American populace, as he was on track to win huge majorities of non-college educated whites, while winning less of college-educated whites, who are normally reliably Republican. The fight between the first female major party candidate and the man accused of sexually assaulting women also turned into a referendum on gender; “what women can be, and what men can get away with,” as TIME put it in the cover story the week before the election.
Worried a Trump victory could cause economic and global uncertainty, investors were in full flight from risky assets such as stocks. In overnight trading, S&P 500 index futures fell 5 percent to hit their so-called limit down levels, indicating they would not be permitted to trade any lower until regular U.S. stock market hours on Wednesday.
What India stands to lose:
Trump’s ‘hawkish’ trade policy of ‘America first’ and his plans to renegotiate all foreign trade deals will affect trade treaties with India, too.
Trump terms H1B visa programme as ‘unfair’, and his stated purpose is to end the programme. If Trump wins, Indian IT stocks and IT companies like TCS and Infosys, BSE -3.36 % are likely to be the first victims of this policy.
He is often seen exhibiting a double standard towards India — on the one hand he has said India is doing great and on the other he said he would bring American jobs back from India.
What India may gain:
Although Trump wants to put stricter immigration rules, he also says he wants to woo Indian entrepreneurs and students to the US.
Trump criticised China throughout his campaign, described it as one of the US’s top adversaries. That could make for an advantage to India.
He said he would label China a currency manipulator and impose heavy tariffs if China didn’t agree to rewrite trade agreements.
He labelled Pakistan as semi-stable and a safe haven for terrorists.
This could mean the continuation of US’ Pivot to Asia policy where India is seen as a counterbalance to China.
Trump’s hard stance on terrorism could also result into deeper Indo-US defense and strategic ties.
And finally, closer defense ties might give a further push to Indo-US business ties as well.
